South Dakota Pheasant Hunting and Fly Fishing

"Hunt today and make memories for tomorrow."

We understand that a hunts success isn't measured by the number of birds killed, or miles walked. What we strive to give you is the pheasant hunting experience we'd want our sons and daughters to have on their first hunt: to wake in the morning with the anticipation of catching a rainbow trout, watching the mallards circle or to see that clay burst into fragments with a well aimed shot; of spending the afternoon with friends walking the fields, watching the dogs quarter the field in front of you and retrieving that rooster pheasant you brought down, the rooster whose colors are as vibrant as an open flame and that rose like a bull elephant charging from the brush, cackling as it fought to gain the sky an experience that leaves you so excited by the day's events that you do not even taste the fantastic meal; during the evening's telling, you can't recall how you made the shot not even seeing the front bead or remembering mounting the gun. Afterwards you go to bed because that will help make tomorrow come more quickly. Finally you fall asleep while anticipating doing it all again the next day…

We measure success by the experiences taken away by our guests and the friendships made. Because of this and our philosophy that the most important thing is family, each guest may bring one child and/or a spouse with no extra charge for lodging or food. Our facilities, dogs and staff members allow Granite Springs to make memories of a lifetime for you, or to bring back the hunting excitement of your youth. Do not sell yourself short; come join us and be one of the few that enjoys pheasant hunting and life as it should be.

Your Hunt

Basically, we will always hunt in a manner that will ensure each guest has a good time no matter the guests' shooting or physical abilities. Pheasant hunting starts at noon which allows guests to customize their morning. Generally guests rise around 8-9 am, have breakfast, and do one or two of the following activities:

  • Shooting a round of sporting clays.

  • Fly or cast fishing, on our private lake that has trout, blue gill and other pan fish.

  • Hunt coyotes using Granite Springs blinds, calling them in.

  • Visit to the Cabelas sporting goods store that is within a 15 minute drive.

Of course, it's your hunt, so you can wait until 11:00 to rise. At that time the hunters will start to gather and Larry, Kevin or Brennan will guide your group to a hunting area. Guest parties that are 8 persons or larger will hunt alone. We do however combine small groups or individuals in order to have better hunting for all. Each group will hunt with dogs in order to limit any loss of game. (The dogs can be yours, ours or a combination.) Groups move to the field via large SUV's which use a lot of gas but are very comfortable, and convenient, we enjoy them regardless of the political wailings of the left.

We have roughly 6000 acres roughly in which to hunt. This much terrain combined with the natural attributes of the pheasant allow each group to hunt to the physical level of activity they desire. For example, One guide is in his golden years likes to walk slow, watch the dogs and have a snack after the end of each field. We provide a field snack and drinks for all hunters and guests. Another guide pushes through the fields faster, flushes a lot of birds and hopes that the blockers at the end of the field are good at pass shooting, doesn't always have time for snacks or drinks until the end of the day. Yet another guide can't seem to unwind yet from the Marine Corps. His drives are mini maneuvers that combine the movement of the dogs, the terrain and abilities of the individuals to ensure the destruction / harvest of the enemy / birds.

Each day usually ends around 5-6 pm. Hunters and guides may clean the birds at the facilities. Or just let us take care of the dirty work and prepare the birds for shipping to your home while you get ready for supper.

Our standard supper looks something like this:

  • Salad

  • Onion Soup

  • Steak or Pheasant as a main dish

  • Vegetable “so we can tell mom we ate healthy”

  • Baked Potatoes or French fries

  • Home made bread

  • Dessert
